We had our heart set on finishing the last piece of the Florida East Coast today, a short 7-mile stretch from the Rte A1A Bridge to the ramp on Big Talbot Island where we had put in on the 30th. But by the time we had been to the Post Office and arrived at the bridge I was feeling sick, the wind was howling again and I just did not think it was smart to start out under these conditions. It was a big disappointment as we drove away leaving such a small piece uncovered. This section has turned us away three times because of weather. It will have to wait until we come back to do the part of the Georgia Coast we have also left undone. Our trip this year has been interrupted too many times by wind and other distractions.
So we started driving north and by mid afternoon were in Charleston where we started the trip exactly a month ago. All of the familiar landmarks along the way brought back some good memories. Stepping out of the car in Charleston I noted that it was warmer here than in Florida. In fact, the wind was calm as well! Just as it had been when we started.
Once again I must lay down my oars for a few months and reenter reality, which I am afraid, has accumulated in the form of piles of mail at home large enough to fill a load to the dump where 99% of it belongs anyway!
Those of you who have pledged by the mile you may be happy to know that the total mileage will remain at 273!
